What I did
- Started flying at 13 (2019). Learned to fly and shoot with a DJI Mavic 2 Pro, capturing aerial photo and video wherever I traveled, from Colorado to Costa Rica.
- Built a library. Over the next couple of years I collected a large set of shots across several states and countries.
- Put it to work (around 2021). Listed the content on Pond5 and Shutterstock and sold more than 80 licenses.
- Found repeat use. My footage has been licensed for use on many travel and tourism websites.
- Took on clients. Shot commercial aerial content as a freelance contractor, including a stadium shoot for Destrehan High School.
What it taught me
- Even as a teenager, I found that people valued my work once I put it out there.
- Online marketplaces can put your work in front of buyers you would never meet otherwise.
- Shooting for a client means working to what they need, not just what I want to shoot.
